People need to be healthy to meet the challenges they face. In addition to the normal health concerns we all have, the people we serve live in a very toxic environment, are often malnourished, do not have ready access to safe water, and must contend with parasites and illnesses such as Dengue Fever.

New Beginnings provides access to doctors, dentists, medicine and ongoing treatments. Some of these costs are relatively inexpensive, for example, a child can be cured of parasites for about $150 pesos ($15 Cdn). Some treatments are considerably more expensive, and may require lab tests and follow up visits.

We welcome any medical and health professionals - doctors, dentists, nurses, physiotherapists, masseuses etc. - to come and volunteer your time and skills.

A proper education is necessary to obtain good employment and break the cycle of working on the garbage dump or for sub-poverty wages. • Registration - $ 300 pesos
  • Maintenance - $ 400 pesos
  • Meal program - $ 2,000 pesos
  • Materials - $ 250 pesos

Families deserve to live in a safe, secure, clean house with water, sewer and electricity. Currently, most families live in houses made of materials found on the garbage dump - tarpaper, tarps, clothes - whatever they can find. Floors are usually dirt, which contributes to parasites and unsanitary conditions. Sewers are often not hooked up, which can lead to sewage leaking onto the street, where the children play.

New Beginnings is committed to helping families live in a proper house by:

  • pouring concrete floors
  • providing building materials, such as blocks, concrete and proper roofing
  • helping the families build their houses using visiting mission teams or individuals
  • coordinating micro loans to help build a house through CompassioNet Canada
  • working with the local government to install sewer hookups for every house
  • helping to hook up water and electricity

New Beginnings has purchased land on which to build a community centre/apartments/church - i.e. a multi-use facility to be used by the community and for New Beginnings programs. Donations to this building fund are appreciated.

Typical construction and hook up costs are:

  • 3/8" rebar - $75 pesos
  • Armex metal supports - $120 pesos
  • Cement (bag) - $100 pesos
  • Mortar (bag) - $80 pesos
  • Sand (truckload) - $600 pesos
  • Gravel (truckload) - $900 pesos
  • 1/2 sand & 1/2 gravel (truckload) - $800 pesos
  • Cement bricks; 10x14x28(cm)(1,000) - $2,350 pesos
  • Cement bricks; 12x20x40(cm)(1,000) - $5,350 pesos
  • Cement bricks: 14x20x40(cm)(1,000) - $6,500 pesos
  • Red bricks (1,000) - $2,100 pesos
  • Laminas tiles for roof - $440 pesos
  • Metal supports for roof - $500 pesos
  • Electricity hookup - $2,000 pesos
  • Water hookup - $3,000 pesos
  • Sewer hookup - $2,000 pesos

The materials to build a typical 4m x 4m (12'x12') one room house, complete with water and electricity, can cost approximately $30,000 pesos ($3,000 Cdn).

Milk

Milk is provided weekly to all of the children and pregnant and nursing mothers. Enough milk is provided to allow each child or mother 2 glasses a day - about 4 litres weekly.

Milk is provided in two forms, depending on the needs and preferences of the families:

  • liquid - a 1 litre carton, which stays fresh until opened. These cartons can cost from $10 to $15 pesos per litre, depending on availability.
  • powder - packets which are mixed with one litre of water. These packets cost about $12 pesos each. The powdered milk is mainly used for babies and very young children.

New Beginnings spends, on average, $4,000 pesos ($365 cdn)weekly on the milk program.

Food Program

The families often need assistance to ensure there is enough food. A family of 6 (2 adults, 4 children) will spend about $100 pesos a day on food. However, this will only purchase a bag of rice, eggs, tortillas, salsa, and zuko (fruit crystals). This is what a family will eat, every day, if there is enough money. Fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and milk are not part of a family's normal diet.

New Beginnings supplements each families diet by providing a bag of groceries - called a dispensa - weekly. The contents of the dispensa are different every second week. The two dispensas are:

  1. Week 1
    • 500 ml bottle of cooking oil - $10 pesos
    • 1 kg bag of rice - $14 pesos
    • 2 x 200g bags of pasta - $10 pesos
    • 500g bag of rolled oats - $8 pesos
    • various fruits and vegetables - 20 pesos
    • Total - $62 pesos ($5.65 Cdn) per dispensa
  2. Week 2
    • various fruits and vegetables - 20 pesos
    • 1 kg bag of beans - $20 pesos
    • 500g bag of lentils - $8 pesos
    • 1 tin of tuna - $9 pesos
    • Toilet paper - $5 pesos
    • Total - $62 pesos ($5.65 Cdn) per dispensa

Supplemental food is provided to families when requested. New Beginnings spends, on average, $6,000 pesos ($546 cdn) weekly on food.

Mosquito Control

Mosquitos in this area carry Dengue Fever. This is a serious illness for which there is no cure. After being bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus, the incubation period ranges from three to 15 (usually five to eight) days before the signs and symptoms of dengue appear. Dengue starts with chills, headache, pain upon moving the eyes, and low backache. Painful aching in the legs and joints occurs during the first hours of illness. The temperature rises quickly as high as 104° F (40° C), with relative low heart rate and low blood pressure. The eyes become reddened. A flushing or pale pink rash comes over the face and then disappears. The glands in the neck and groin are often swollen.

Fever and other signs of dengue last for two to four days, followed by rapid drop in temperature (defervescence) with profuse sweating. This precedes a period with normal temperature and a sense of well-being that lasts about a day. A second rapid rise in temperature follows. A characteristic rash appears along with the fever and spreads from the extremities to cover the entire body except the face. The palms and soles may be bright red and swollen.

New Beginnings provides mosquito nets (when available), and mosquito repellant such as spirals. However, the best solution is prevention. New Beginnings housing construction will provide better housing to keep mosquitoes outside. Projects such as connecting houses to sewers will remove standing water where the mosquitoes breed.

Furniture

New Beginnings will provide furniture as needed. There is a constant requirement for beds, mattresses, stoves and shelving. Fridges are provided where electricity is available.

Propane

Most families do not have proper cooking facilities, and often cook over open fires. New Beginnings will provide each family with a gas stove, propane tank and hookups. The propane tanks are replaced when empty.
